The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start ringing off the hook for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2011 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Rob Ashford
Nominated for Best Director of a Musical and Best Choreography, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying
“It’s thrilling! I’m in London, in the middle of technical rehearsals for Shrek and casting for Anna Christie at the Donmar Warehouse, and I’m just as thrilled as if I was at home. I was literally in rehearsal, I glanced down as the phone was ringing, and my agent told me the great news. This production has been a joy every step of the way. Dan [Radcliffe] is inspirational. It was such a joy to create the show and the dances around him. I love this show and I’m so proud of the work we’ve done. Both [nominations] mean so much to me. I love directing and stretching myself in that direction, but when I started directing, I made a pact with myself that I didn’t ever want to let the choreography suffer because I was wearing the other hat. Every single time [I’m nominated for a Tony] it’s such a pleasure, and every single time I’m so thankful to be recognized.”
